Crete - Q & A

Travel tipsWhen is the best time to take a holiday in Crete?

The holiday season starts in April and finishes at the end of October.  If you don’t mind the odd spot of rain then April is a good month to go as the resorts are generally quieter.   If you want guaranteed warm temperatures and no rain, then May and June are the best months to go.  July and August are not only the hottest but this is also peak season so all the resorts will be bustling with holidaymakers.  With the peak season over, September and October offer a temperate climate, quiet resorts and the perfect time for walkers to explore the mountains and gorges.

Is the water safe to drink?
Yes the water on Crete is safe to drink, however bottled water is widely available if you prefer.

Staying safe in Crete?
The Cretans are very proud of their very low crime rate, and will help in any way they can when a crime is committed to ensure that the culprit is brought to justice.  However, you shouldn’t become complacent about looking after your possessions.  Take sensible precautions such as making use of the hotel safe for your passport and valuables and regardless of whether you are a man or woman don’t leave your drink unattended.  Be careful when using cash machines.

Mosquitoes are a problem in Crete during the summer months and are especially attracted to areas where there is fresh water.  Fortunately they don’t carry any harmful diseases; however it doesn’t make their bite any less irritating.  Keeping covered will certainly help but it’s also worth packing some repellent cream or spray.  If you do get bitten by a mosquito you can use a sting relief cream to sooth the itching.
It goes without saying that whilst you are out and about in the sunshine or sunbathing use a sun protection cream or spray and apply at regular intervals to avoid burning your skin.

Is it customary to leave a tip?
Leaving a tip is optional, however, it is common to round off the bill for example if the bill comes to 8, 40 Euro you might choose to pay 10 Euros if you feel you have received a good service.
